what i read in august
While I love a thickum, it can severely hamper my progress through my teetering To Be Read stack. For the first time in a long time I’m behind pace in my annual Reading Challenge. Catching COVID last week didn’t help either. Gotta get back on the wagon for September.
The Books of Jacob - Again, great education on an historical moment I previously knew nothing about and some beautiful writing. Unlikeable characters though and she really couldve handled the multiple names much better. I think I lost a lot by not recalling the details of a character’s arc because I couldn’t remember who the hell they were.
Black Reconstruction - Probably only got through 20 pages this month. A damn good 20 pages but still.
Seize the Time - Whew chile, they couldn’t find one editor to volunteer their time to help a brother out here? I feel like Bobby is telling me the story out on the prison yard, with all of the redundancies, grammatical inconsistencies, and lack of reflection that would entail. It’s been a slog, but I want to hear the story straight form the brother’s mouth so here we are. The repeated reverence for “Huey P. Newton” is just too much for my spirit though.
