what i read in may

Mrs. Shim is a Killer - I really dig Korean fiction. It got a little busy at the end but still a good read.

Gravity’s Rainbow - Reading this with the New School group. I didn’t suggest it but I was looking forward because I’ve read about it. This will be a slow read; we’re only reading 2 chapters a month. It’s kind of a cross between Catch-22 and Infinite Jest. It’s a slog so far BUT his writing is great. Some passages are strikingly beautiful.

Angela Davis: An Autobiography - My pick for the book club. What is that expression, “Never meet your heroes”? Yeah… Definitely not as offputting as Assata but it bugged how her privileged upbringing and education were downplayed. She wasn’t as entwined with the Panthers as I though so learned some new stuff like that. This book has 3 prologues and they provide some context for the stuff I didn’t like in the book (she saw it herself years later).

Scorpions - Love creepy Japanese characters but incest is not entertaining. Ever.

The Dragon Can’t Dance - I put off reading this for a while but it turned out to be much more interesting than I expected. The main character stuck with me for a while.
